“Trickster” by David Bridel is a creative mix of myths, stories, movement and music that explores the chaos, humor and mystery “the Trickster” brings into our lives. Performed by six actors and a live musician, the show uses shadows, physicality and imagination to create an experience that is funny, strange and engaging all at once.
All the performers commit to the physicality and absurdity of the Trickster spirit. Their chemistry and comedic timing are solid, and the ensemble maintains a playful tone throughout the production.
During the first half of a recent show, however, it was difficult to hear some of the actors onstage, but as the show progressed, it became easier to understand everyone. Arrow Schulman and Joyce Ha each have memorable moments in this production that linger after the show has wrapped.
Sarah Painter’s direction is lighthearted but focused. Physicality, blocking, pacing and movement are clearly important to the storytelling, and the cast commits to that style. Moments when cast members engage directly with the audience help bring everyone into the strange and playful world of the show.

The set is simple but effective. A white backdrop, hanging fabric and tree-like set piece help establish the world of the play without overcrowding the stage. Lighting is wonderful, helping to reinforce the mysticism of the production and elevating its overall aesthetic, especially during scenes with shadow puppets and shadows and light, which add depth and imagination to the storytelling. A fog machine is another nice touch that supports the mysterious and dreamlike quality of the production.
The sole musician’s setup off to the side is a nice creative element that adds to the show’s storytelling. Live music is one of the strongest elements of the production and helps give the show texture.
Overall, “Trickster” is a playful, strange, and imaginative production that leans fully into physical storytelling. The show works best when the movement, music, lighting and ensemble energy come together to create a unique world. “Trickster” is a creative and visually engaging show that offers something different at this year’s Fringe Festival.
